Stock Market Investment*

Investment Clubs

Knowledge Is Power For Profit
Being a member of a stock market investment club is like having hands-on control of your own mutual fund. Each club member contributes money on a monthly basis and the group meets periodically to discuss investments and make investment decisions. Investment clubs can be a very valuable educational tool as long as they utilize good sources of information.

When a group of New York women got together in 1993 to form an investment club, they didn't know a lot about the stock market. They started the club for education -- pooling their knowledge and gaining more information about investing. But, at a recent meeting, they chatted about price-earnings ratios, growth trends in half-a-dozen industries, roller-coaster stock indexes and how all of this was affecting their $120,000 investment club portfolio.

Nationwide, clubs are urged to follow four principles:

• Invest a set amount regularly, usually monthly, regardless of market conditions.
• Reinvest all dividends and capital gains.
• Buy growth stocks or growth stock mutual funds.
• Diversify into different industries and different-sized companies.

It's a fact -- women are better investors
At present, more than two-thirds members of investment clubs are women. The investments of the women-only clubs tend to outperform the men-only groups. Perhaps this is because women, traditionally the buyers in their households, are accustomed to looking for the best quality of goods and services that the money available to them will buy, a major factor in profitable investing. Some believe that women also appear to be more patient than men, allowing women to buy and hold stocks even in volatile markets-another positive investing strategy.

Do your homework before investing
The most prosperous investment clubs make profitable investments because they do their homework before buying and keep close track of the performances of their investments. Investment clubs are a great way for a small group of people to pool their knowledge and systematically invest small dollar amounts for long-term profits.

Investment clubs are a great way to network with local investors in your community.
